Embrace a piece of southwestern Indiana's history as Ryan Rokicki, Director of the Workingmen’s Institute presents “Captain James Penn Bennett: A Good and Brave Officer.”

James Penn Bennett was a husband, father, and teacher living in New Harmony when the Civil War broke out in 1861.  That year, he left his wife and three young children to join the Union Army.  His letters home tell the story of his journey from the banks of the Wabash to the battlefields of the South, and reveal a man whose love for his family was matched by his devotion to his country. 

Join the Southwestern Indiana Historical Society (SWIHS) on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from September- November and February-May at 6:30 PM in Willard Library's Browning Gallery! Dive into the past as local experts bring our heritage to life.
